The Mystery of Hin Sam Wan
Oct 9, 2026
Hin Sam Wan, or Three Whale Rock, is a 75-million-year-old natural sandstone formation in Bueng Kan Province, northeastern Thailand, that resembles a family of swimming whales.
The Geology and the "Mystery"
• Age and Composition: Located in the Phu Sing Forest Park on the Khorat Plateau, the rocks date back roughly 75 million years to the Cretaceous period.
• Natural Erosion: Geologists confirm that the whale-like shapes are the result of millions of years of natural weathering, wind, and rain. Softer surrounding rock eroded away, leaving behind massive, resilient quartz-rich sandstone blocks.
• The Illusion: While internet rumors or online videos sometimes question if human hands sculpted the colossal stones due to their smooth, uniform appearance, experts agree it is entirely a work of natural geological processes.
